Joe Black Café Sydney

Community, Food, and Delicious coffee

Joe Black Café on Commonwealth Street tucked away in a tangle of streets in Surry Hills just a short walk south of Hyde Park, is a great place to take a break from work. From polished floorboards to bright green tiles and a black-and-white mural representing the evolution of man and coffee over time, this daytime sanctuary has a warm vibe. Take a seat and examine the all-day menu of delectable fare while choosing from Five Senses, single-origin, or cold drip coffee.

In addition, you can choose from meals like bolognese mince on toast with poached eggs atop crunchy sourdough, or come back later for a healthy lunch of slow-cooked lamb salad with roast vegetables, lentils, goats’ cheese, and Pedro sauce, followed by a sweet chocolate brownie.

Coming into Joe Black is like walking into the home of a friend — a friend with outstanding coffee taste and culinary prowess.

The Joe Black menu is small but sweet, with everything from cereal and poached eggs to pikelets topped with fruit, jam, and ricotta.

Ben Sweeten is the creator of Joe Black (ex-Proud Mary in Melbourne). He wanted to transfer some of Melbourne’s coffee culture to Sydney and elevate Sydney residents’ espresso experience.

Joe Black takes coffee seriously, as evidenced by the Synesso resting proudly on top of the counter with an impressive-looking filter bar.

This business will widen your espresso horizons by offering Five Senses and single origins. Moreover, they allow demonstrating the distinction between the sweet floral Sertaozinho from Brazil and the savory Sumatra Lintong from Sumatra.

The evolution of man coffee feature wall, enamel camping cutlery and tableware, a 1920s fire extinguisher, and a cabinet Sweeten created himself from off-cuts all work together to add to the charm at Joe Black, and work to create a pleasant ambiance.

Joe Black believes in community and treats our customers like friends. They employ locally sourced ingredients in everything they make, and we’re serious about our coffee.

Joe Black Cafe creates the coffee that will satisfy your caffeine desire from early morning to late afternoon. From their special Espresso, filter coffees, Cold Drips, Rocket Fuel, or a little touch of Magic. Come say hello and don’t be a stranger.
