Chikyu-ya
means "Global Shop" and this cafe's a place to
celebrate the multicultural joy of the bond between Japanese
people and Australians,
with the people who come to eat here being about 50/50 Aussies and Japanese.
But in Bondi Junction, a prime living spot for Japanese
students and semi-permanent
workers (call it Little Tokyo and you'd have some semblance of a point),
what's delightful about Chikyu-Ya is its authenticity as
a homely inner-urban
Nihon-style diner. This is very much how it feels over there - satisfying
chunks of Teriyaki Fish,
instantly downable pan-fried Gyoza dumplings, combination
Sushi and Teriyaki
Chicken and some exemplary Tofu Steak and Tofu Salad for our veggie-burger
cousins all hitting the inner gong that triggers the now
almost universal
cry of "Oishiiiiiiiiii" - that means delicious, folks - get
hip to the multiracial beat. Restaurant owners Toshi and Kayo Karube
put the word
"host" back into host-pitality.![]() |
