Parramatta foodies were delighted when long-time restaurateur Bill Nikoloudis found a charming Harris Park homestead to resume trading under his ancient Peronis banner. STEWART DAWES reports ...
Bill's original Peronis dates back to 1989-1993, after that Bill operated under the name Ziggys Cafe/Restaurant, then from 1996-1999 he ran Sabatinis in Crows Nest which he later sold to Steve and Jackie Walker, and then from 1999 to 2004 he ran a second Sabatinis in Parramatta. If you dined at any of the above restaurants during the years mentioned, you'll likely be well aware that Bill makes the words hospitality and quality almost his own, with gentle grace he treats everyone as though they're his own family.
Simply divine Italian food with a Mod-Oz touch is what Bill is all about - from melt-in-the-mouth Duck Confit to Veal Scallopini diners can expect generous servings, and even the entree Bruscetta is superbly marinated - "it's got a bit of a bite to it" Bill says matter-of-factly, the truth is it's far better than his typically modest description.
My current favourite dish is whole ocean trout stuffed with English spinach & oyster mushrooms in a beurre blanc sauce. I've had it three visits in a row which says a lot considering what an exotic grazer I am.
And Then There's The ... Wine ...
In a large underground cellar, Bill has 180 wine varieties ready to go, but what makes this fact even more compelling is that the cellar caters for quick diners happy to simply quaff a decent $25 Italian red, through to Penfolds Grange 1992 for $800, or even a magnum of 1994 Penfolds range for $2000. Bill's not elitist about wine at all, however, for him it's about the enjoyment factor - people taking delight in good or great wines whatever the budget.
Peronis also has a 30-person function room, and while they're currently not open on Sundays, they will open for a function. Of course the entire restaurant of around 140 seats could be booked for a single function if enough notice is given.
Getting Functional ...
Peronis Restaurant was purpose built to reflect the old heritage style buildings in the Parramatta area. Behind the doors of this beautiful house you will find an exquisite boardroom style function room and a licensed restaurant with outdoor and indoor seating. It's indeed regarded as one of Parramatta's best function restaurant venues, and caters for both corporate and private functions and is great venue for a private parties such as christenings, 21st, wedding receptions and anniversaries. Bill provides function seating options in both the private function room or in the licensed restaurant.
Our further recommendation for casual diners: sit out on the alfresco verandah area - it's got a lovely garden vibe - and also allow yourself a bit longer than usual to enjoy your lunch or dinner - it's so much the right place to kick back and soak up what good restaurants are all about.
What other media say about Peronis Restaurant ...
Charming classical restaurant presentation, old-school and spacious, then the food takes the experience up even another notch. But it's not pretentious so is really a place to relax and enjoy dining like it was in the 70s and 80s - at the best places anyway. Also the prices here are very low for what you get, filling serves but presented nicely. I hope Peroni's never change and I can enjoy the same experience ten years from now. - Freshmag.com.au
This place is not about haute cuisine, in fact quite the reverse - serves here are pretty big and I've only once managed to squeeze in dessert. A lot of these dishes are classical, you would have seen them on menus 20-30 years ago. But what makes Peronis one of my fave restaurants in Sydney is the dedication to sauces. They have a fantastic chef - the only way you can produce the intricacies of flavours is with slow cooking. I haven't tried all Parramatta restaurants, but I doubt there's a better one. - Google Plus.
The location is lovely, a well-kept brick house with a neat garden and outdoor seating perfect for a sunny day. Inside it has the feel of a traditional fine diner with olive green walls, an expanse of timber wine racks and comfortable booths along one wall. Start with the excellent pan-fried scallops – plump and meaty, with the roe on, they have a beautiful caramel char. Sprinkled with fried eschalots, they sit on a green pea risotto in a pool of chive butter sauce. Good too is the chicken, eggplant and sweet potato timbale and the smoked chicken penne with pesto cream. Mains are a generous affair ranging from a thick cut of rib-eye on potato rosti and ratatouille, to a more gentle seared salmon fillet with sweet corn and tomato salsa. For dessert, warm profiteroles with chocolate sauce are perfect with a short coffee. - Best Restaurants.
We went to peronis today at lunch time and we really are impressed with the food quality and value and service. We tried is new 3 courses menu wich was great quality, size and value. Service was very professional from skilled restaurant people, and hey they maibe not be young anymore but they know exactly what they are doing. We do not live in Parramatta, but we are going to come back on a regular base, is well worth to travel, thanks guys for you professionality. - A Reader on Eatability.
When I die and go to restaurant heaven, it will look a lot like Peronis. As a chef myself I don't often get a night off, but when there's a family event that I can get to, we all book in there and Bill the owner makes us feel right at home. Last time we went there was 12 of us and the kitchen didn't miss a beat. My dad loves the HUGE wine list. People argue about which is the best restaurant in Parramatta, in my view there isn't even an argument. This place is head & shoulders above the rest. - Barbara McCann on West Coast Cafes.
