Announcing
the growth of post-pretentious café hospitality. Now that we’re
past the vain greed of the pre-Olympics hype machine, we celebrate
the places which stand above the snootiness, which transcend the
tetchiness - such as Balmain’s Short Black Café - a place that
welcomes all ages, all nationalities, all persuasions.
Owner Klara Lantay brings her boundless enthusiasm to this “café
with heart”, while chef Michael Nitschki, at the helm for ten
years (!) dishes up some generous servings.
Check out their huge “Super Breakfast” or their yummy Eggs Florentine.
Other highlights: Hungarian Scrambled Eggs, Eggs Benedict with
Smoked Salmon, Bubble & Squeak, Vegetarian Breakfast, Gourmet
Beef Sausages, burgers galore, gourmet sandwiches with such delights
as herbed chicken, smoked salmon, BLT and vegetarian, and salads
such as Chicken Caesar, Warm Chicken, Tuna, etc.
Short Black also does a great range in pastas, and - always appealing
- Savoury Crepes.
Another reason to visit?
They have one of only two “Balmain café views” of the city, a
leftfield view which includes the Harbour Bridge.
Klara’s family built the building 28 years ago, so it’s no wonder
she makes you feel at home -
it’s virtually her home!
