Packed
most nights with good lookin' folk, Longrain arrived just before the
millennial hour and instantly became the warehouse dining experience
of choice for the sleek Surry Hills set. Innovative Thai-fusion
dining in a communal bench atmosphere (see also Cafe
Mint, Blue
Orange and Jimmy
Liks for similar communal bench designs all done by Rob Sample),
their menu boasts succulently titled dishes such as the Jungle Curry
of Hare with Wild Ginger and Holy Basil, Crisp Fried Whole Reef Fish
with Chilli Tamarind Sauce, Yellow Curry of Duck and Pumpkin with Ginger
Relish, and Tea Smoked Duck with Cucumber Mint and Roasted Rice. Even
the desserts sound sophisticated - Caramel Custard with Coconut Biscuits,
or the Sweet Potato Dumplings filled with Caramelised Coconut and Peanuts
- to name a couple. While the spot can seem intimidating on first entry,
they haven't left good manners and a welcoming smile off the menu. Upmarket
restaurant and bar
all in one, Longrain is arthouse food modelled for models, a food stylist's
paradise, sure to remain the "It" place for a while yet.
